Permissions and updates

What Mockrew asks for, why each permission exists, and how updates behave.

Mockrew asks for four permissions and one host permission. Reviewers and security teams usually want the mapping before installing anything, so here it is in full.

PermissionWhy it is needed
storageRules, projects and UI preferences are kept in chrome.storage.local (Chrome gives extensions 10 MB). Nothing is uploaded.
declarativeNetRequestThe Headers and Redirect actions are executed by the browser itself, before the request is sent. Only dynamic rules are used — no static rule files.
offscreenJS Hook code runs in an isolated offscreen document, so your script cannot touch the page or the extension’s own context.
alarmsPeriodic re-validation of the Pro license (every 12 hours) so a cancelled subscription stops working without needing a browser restart.
Host permission all_urlsRules can point at any API, so the injected script must be able to run on any page you debug. It only reads requests your page makes and only answers the ones a rule matches.
Mockrew never asks for the debugger permission and never attaches a debugger. The DevTools panel is a normal extension panel.

Updating

Updates are delivered by the Chrome Web Store. Rules, projects and preferences survive an update; the extension may reload itself, which briefly interrupts interception on already-open tabs until you reload them.

Uninstalling

Removing the extension deletes its local storage, including your rules. Export first (panel top bar → Export) if you want to keep them — the file can be imported again after a reinstall.

Using it next to other tools

  • Chrome’s own Network overrides — independent; whichever runs first wins. Pick one per request type to avoid confusion.
  • A system proxy / Charles / mitmproxy — compatible; Mockrew answers matched requests before they reach the proxy.
  • A service worker in the page — responses produced by the page’s own service worker bypass the browser’s network request layer (Headers / Redirect). Use the Mock action for those.
